New "security feature" at Westlake Shopping Center Safeway:
Today my wife and I went into the Westlake Shopping Center Safeway to do our weekly grocery shopping; upon turning down the aisle containing grooming and cosmetic products (we were looking for toothpaste) we discovered that the store had installed a new "security feature" since our last visit only the week before. A full 2/3 of the products on that aisle, including all the toothpaste, were now locked inside plexiglass cases. In order to access the products in the cases a shopper has to go to the checkout counter, ask the checkout clerk to call for another employee to meet you back at the aisle, open the case and watch you as you read labels and decide which product you wish to select, then lock the case behind you. The problem with this, of course, is that they are treating their paying customers like they cannot be trusted; not to mention the maddening inconvenience one must now endure just to buy toothpaste! We decided that the toothpaste and skin cream was just not worth the trouble and decided we would go to another store and get our cosmetics, soap and grooming products. Upon moving to the next aisle we discovered a woman and her infant child waiting in front of another bank of locked cases waiting for someone to come and facilitate her access to the baby formula. She told us she had been waiting more than 10 minutes. Walking around this once convenient and well laid out store we found several other aisles with dozens of products locked behind plexiglass cases. My wife and I have decided to find a store other than Safeway. When we decide we have a free bank of time to go shopping, we want to make our list, go to the store, head straight to the products we need, and head to checkout to pay for our goods. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible at Safeway. Life is too short to spent a third of your shopping time waiting for someone to monitor your toothpaste selection.

There are no redeeming qualities about this Safeway. They never staff enough people for the checkout lines, so there is always a line at the self-checkout registers which they close at night anyway. They aren't very good at stocking items, the items are never really inexpensive, and their store baked goods always seem to be sort of stale. I basically only come here when the Trader's Joes right behind it isn't open. Just go there if you can.

This place is horrendous. They've implemented a new "security feature" in which you cannot buy any personal items (i.e. Shampoo, toothpaste) yourself. A person must be paged and then that person has to take it to self check out immediately and you must pay for it right then and there, regardless of whether or not you have shopping to do. If you do not pay for it immediately you are not allowed to hold onto it, neither is the store employee. You must do it their way. It's ridiculous.

The meat selection has downgraded. Very few things are available anymore, and are usually snatched up in the morning.

There are only ever three lanes open. Never any more than that. It doesn't matter how busy the Safeway is, with checkout lines going all the way down the aisles. This is consistent.
Do not ever shop on a weekend here. Lord help you if you do.

Chronically understaffed. Why have 12 lanes during peak hours if you consistently only staff 3 or 4?
